Camp David Despite many "big name" National Park units in an around the D.C. metro area, Catoctin Mountain Park is often packed with area hikers. I love mossy forests, my favorite still being the woods of Fundy National Park in New Brunswick (Can.)
This is really the easiest trail in the park, a short walk to a nice view... These two took my view, so they made for a nice reference point in the photo instead. Camp David would in the general area to the right of these two, but can't be seen anywhere from along this trail or from any vantage point. Downtown Gettysburg, with the famous Gettysburg Hotel in the background. The town is only about a half hour drive from Catoctin Mountain Park.
St. Croix sign Sign at the Sandrock Cliffs portion of the St. Croix Riverway Breeah preps the picnic table. This was a great spot for lunch as it was right on the river bank. No signs in the area, but you can find it by taking the trail on the right (once you park at the Sandrock Cliffs lot) We tagged these as beaver tracks...are we right?
What's funny is the Sandrock Cliffs are easier viewed from the Minnesota side of the river (which is more difficult to access). Standing atop the Cliffs gives you a nice vantage point, though (not to mention this may be one of the higher points in western Wisconsin). Breeah stands near the cliff edge. Some interesting designs and pictures carved into the rock. I imagine these were probably done not long ago, as there were names, vulgarities and phone numbers carved into another nearby rock. Maybe a bit hard to tell here, but it's kind of a long drop from the top of the cliff to the river.

Badlands National Park The Badlands literally appear out of nowhere along the relatively flat plains of South Dakota Be on guard. Are these a threat in winter too?
Despite the blustery day AND leaving my tripod in the car, I still managed to get a picture of myself The humble little Minuteman Missile NHS HQ. One of the signs outside the Minuteman Missile HQ The friendly skies of Montana along Highway 212 - I made it all the way there!
